CAEFF Research Experience for Teachers Program
Engineering Fibers and Films Experience (EFF-X)
June 10 – July 22, 2009
Clemson University and Clark Atlanta University
The Center for Advanced Engineering Fibers and Films (CAEFF) at Clemson University is offering high school science and math teachers the opportunity to participate in the Research Experience for Teachers program during the summer of 2008. The goals of the program are to familiarize teachers with the research process, educate them about polymer science and technology, and engage them in the transfer of knowledge from laboratory to classroom.
Eight math, chemistry, physics or physical science teachers will be selected from South Carolina high schools, and two teachers will be selected from the metro Atlanta school district. Each teacher will be placed with two mentors, a faculty advisor and a graduate student mentor, at Clemson University (for SC teachers) or Clark Atlanta University (for Atlanta teachers). The teachers will participate in a 6-week program during the summer, and will be invited to continue their research or teaching module development during the academic year through a competitive mini-grant program.
Participating teachers will gain a thorough understanding of technical and scientific concepts pertaining to polymers and polymer processing, and will receive training in teaching module development and basic methods used in education research.
